Dual Language/Immersion Programs
The focus of dual language/immersion programs is to help majority and/or minority speakers become proficient in the target language while mastering subject content from other disciplines.

The K-5 Dual Language Curriculum was completed as part of the FLAP grant project "Building the K-5 Infrastructure for Dual Language/Immersion Programs." The draft curriculum was written by teachers and administrators representing 11 dual language/ immersion schools in the state to guide the development of language competencies in these programs and is inclusive of all modern foreign languages.

These schools piloted the draft curriculum during the 2006-2007 school year and a revised draft curriculum document or implementation guide, including glossary, resources and activities, is being compiled. We appreciate any feedback you may have on this and encourage you to send comments and questions to Ann Marie Gunter, World Language Consultant at agunter@dpi.state.nc.us

All of the information from the K-5 Dual Language Standards has now been incorporated into the World Language Essential Standards and extended to include K-12 standards and clarifying objectives for dual language/immersion programs.

To accompany the World Language Essential Standards (WLES), several Instructional Toolkit documents have been created:

The Crosswalk contains information about how the WLES are new, better and different:

The Unpacking Standards documents are designed to support teachers in their understanding of the WLES and demonstrate at a granular level the knowledge and skills students are expected to master for a particular program.  Here is the Unpacking Document for K-12 Dual Language/Immersion Programs in PDF format:

Four different models of dual language/immersion programs exist in North Carolina:
  • Two-Way
  • Full Immersion
  • Partial Immersion
  • Developmental Bilingual
The model is chosen based on the student population being served.

In Fall 2005, there were 7 schools with dual language/immersion programs. Currently, there are more than 40 programs and that number is growing.
